Nozizeption ist bereits ab der 20.–22. Schwangerschaftswoche (SSW) möglich. Kortikale Schmerzverarbeitung geschieht ab der 24. Schwangerschaftswoche (Wolf 1999; ▸ Kap. 1 u. 2) Dabei ist bei Früh- und Neugeborenen das zentrale Schmerzhemmungssystem deutlich schlechter ausgebildet als das nozizeptive System, sodass beim Früh- und Neugeborenen generell vom Überwiegen nozizeptiven Stresses auszugehen ist (▸ Kap. 2).
