failure of an optical or electronic lens or mirror to bring light into focus. When aberration is due to the form of the lens or mirror, it is called spherical aberration. When aberration is due to a change in the refrangibility of light of different colors, it is called chromatic aberration. Aberration in magnifiers often causes an inaccurate diagnosis of flawlessness or color of gems. There are various types of aberration, such as chromatic aberration, coma, spherical aberration, astigmatism, and distortion. Also called optical aberration.
