Abstract

Several persistent pain syndromes are influenced by the sympathetic nervous system, including dysesthesias, reflex sympathetic dystrophy (complex regional pain syndrome II) induced by accidental or surgical trauma to nervous structures, postherpetic neuralgia, pain from the peripheral neuropathy of diabetes, and pain from the peripheral entrapment syndromes. These so-called sympathetically maintained pain syndromes have three common characteristics: (1) a history of noxious stimulation in the painful area; (2) a continuous burning pain with allodynia; and (3) relief by sympathetic blockade.
