Eine optimierte chirurgische Technik, die Definition der Indikationen, vor allem aber die Einführung moderner Immunsuppressiva haben die Lebertransplantation zu einem Routineverfahren werden lassen. Bis Ende 2004 lag die Zahl der in Europa transplan-tierten Lebern bei über 63.000. In Deutschland werden etwa 700—800 Lebern pro Jahr transplantiert.
