Sowohl primäre, d. h. vom Organ selbst ausgehende, als auch sekundäre Lebertumoren stellen differentialdiagnostisch und therapeutisch ein häufiges internistisches Problem dar. Sie werden im Rahmen der körperlichen Untersuchung (Hepatomegalie), Labordiagnostik (Erhöhung der Cholestaseparameter und Transaminasen) oder zufällig mittels bildgebender Verfahren wie z. B. Sonographie, Computertomographie und Magnetresonanztomographie entdeckt. Gerade die Differenzierung benigner von malignen Lebertumoren (⊡ Tabelle 77.1) erfordert auf Grund der daraus resultierenden therapeutischen Konsequenzen die Sicherung der Diagnose. Hierzu ist — bis auf wenige Ausnahmen — auch eine Biopsiegewinnung mittels Punktion, Laparoskopie oder sogar offener Gewebeentnahme im Rahmen einer Laparotomie notwendig.
