Die infektiöse Arthropathie ist definiert als eine Gelenkentzündung, die durch eine direkte Infektion des Gelenks mit einem Erreger hervorgerufen wird. Demgegenüber ist die reaktive Arthritis abzugrenzen, bei der infolge einer primären extraartikulären Infektion eine Arthritis auftritt, ohne dass ein vitaler Krankheitserreger aus der Synovialflüssigkeit oder Synovia direkt nachgewiesen werden kann. Zur infektiösen Arthropathie zählen bakterielle, mykotische, parasitäre und virale Arthritiden. Bakterielle Arthritiden stellen die größte Gruppe infektiöser Arthropathien in Nordund Mitteleuropa dar.
