Herzinsuffizienz bezeichnet ein komplexes klinisches Syndrom, das durch Störungen der linksventrikulären Funktion und der neuroendokrinen Regulation gekennzeichnet ist und von Symptomen wie verminderte Belastbarkeit, Flüssigkeitsretention und eingeschränkter Lebenserwartung begleitet wird. Pathophysiologisch kann Herzinsuffizienz als Zustand gestörter Herzfunktion aufgefasst werden, der dazu führt, dass das Herz nicht in der Lage ist, ein für den Bedarf des Organismus ausreichendes Herzminutenvolumen zu fördern und/oder dies nur unter abnormal erhöhten Füllungsdrücken leisten kann.
