Unter interstitiellen Lungenerkrankungen versteht man Erkrankungen, die primär das Interstitium der Lunge, das Alveolarepithel und das Endothel der Lungengefäße betreffen. Die Begriffe »interstitielle Lungenerkrankung«, »fibrosierende Alveolitis«, und »(interstitielle) Lungenfibrose« werden im klinischen Gebrauch häufig synonym verwendet. Eine Alveolitis ist histologisch definiert als eine entzündliche Infiltration der Alveo-larwand. Unbehandelt führt sie in vielen Fällen zu einer Zerstörung alveolokapillärer Funktionseinheiten und zum Ersatz des Interstitiums durch funktionsuntüchtiges Narbengewebe.
