Abstract

The stability of large wavelength, small amplitude disturbances is discussed on the basis of first principles, initially for the case without active control. Special attention is given to the occurrence of discontinuities that can form in the curves of Marangoni number for neutral stability versus wavenumber as the depth ratio of the two layers varies. The use of linear proportional control is then discussed for the twofluid system, and significant change in the Marangoni number for neutral stability is shown to be possible for such disturbances.
