Abstract

According to recent ideas from particle physics, the universe could be a higher-dimensional spacetime, with our observable part of the universe being a four-dimensional “brane” surface. In this picture, Standard Model particles and fields are confined to the brane while gravity propagates freely in all dimensions. If one of the extra spatial dimensions is very large relative to the Planck scale, this lowers the fundamental gravity scale, possibly even down to electroweak scales (~TeV). At low energies, gravity is localized at the brane and general relativity is recovered, but at high energies gravity “leaks” off the brane, leading to significant corrections to general relativistic dynamics and perturbations. Here I review the geometry, dynamics and perturbations of simple brane-world models for cosmology.
