Definition and Characteristics
Gastritis is defined as an inflammatory process confined to the gastric mucosa. Endoscopically, gastritis is defined by the appearance of edema, erythema, exsudate, coarsening or atrophy of the gastric mucosa or mucosal hemorrhage. According to the Sydney system, different forms can be endoscopically described as erythematous-exsudative, erosive, atrophic, hemorrhagic, hyperplastic or enterogastric gastritis [1]. Histopathological investigation serves to determine the topography, severity and etiology of gastritis. The updated Sydney System has been accepted as the standard classification of gastritis (Table 1) [1]. Often, there is not a good correlation between the endoscopic and histologic appearance.
