Bei der Untersuchung von Entwicklungsprozessen lassen sich zwei verschiedene Ansätze unterscheiden: Entweder nimmt man an, dass die Veränderung ein kontinuierlicher Prozess ist, oder es wird der Übergang zwischen verschiedenen Stadien analysiert (vgl. hierzu etwa Piaget (1947) im Bereich der kognitiven Entwicklung und Kohlberg (1980) bezüglich der moralischen Entwicklung). Im ersten Fall wird man sich vor allem auf Wachstumsmodelle konzentrieren (vgl. etwa Singer/Willett 2003), während bei der Analyse von diskreten Veränderungsvorgängen unterschiedliche Ansätze von Markov-Ketten-Modellen zur Anwendung kommen (Kaplan 2008).
