Professionen gelten als klassischer Gegenstand der Soziologie. Seit dem 19. Jahrhundert sind klare Querverbindungen zwischen der Professionssoziologie und der Gesellschaftsanalyse entstanden; diese Verbindungen waren mit der Erwartung verbunden, dass die Tätigkeiten der Professionen und der professionellen Praktiker weitreichende Auswirkungen in der modernen Gesellschaft haben (vgl. Spencer 1897: 179–318, Parsons 1939). Auch die beruflichen Tätigkeiten von Lehrern wurden aus dieser Perspektive analysiert.
