Deutschland ist ein Einwanderungsland geworden - dies stellte 2001 die unabhängige Kommission „Zuwanderung“ fest. Migrantinnen und Migranten kommen bereits seit Jahrzehnten in gro\er Zahl nach Deutschland. In den vergangenen 40 Jahren hat sich die auslandische Bevölkerung in Deutschland auf 6,7 Millionen Menschen verdoppelt; ihr Anteil an der Gesamtbevölkerung betrug im Jahr 2004 etwa 8,3%- Bezieht man alle Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund ein, also Migranten (gemeint sind hier und im Folgenden Frauen und Manner) mit deutscher Staatsangehörigkeit und Kinder aus Migrantenfamilien, so steigt dieser Anteil auf fast ein F:unftel (19%) der Bevölkerung (Duschek et al. 2006). Die größte Gruppe einer ausländischen Nationalitä sind mit 1,8 Millionen Menschen die türkischen Staatsbürger. Viele von ihnen kamen in den 1960er Jahren als so genannte „Gastar - beiter“ nach Deutschland oder sind nach dem Anwerbestopp 1973 als Familienangehörige nachgezogen. Auch die durchschnittliche Aufenthaltsdauer von Ausländern steigt. Vielfach wachst eine in Deutschland geborene „2.“ oder sogar „3.“ Generation heran und eine zunehmende Zahl von Migranten der 1. Generation verbleibt auch im Rentenalter in Deutschland. Aus„Gastarbeitern“ und ihren Familien sind defacto Zuwanderer geworden. Migration bietet vielen Migrantinnen und Migranten Chancen in wirtschaftlicher und in gesundheitlicher Hinsicht - insbesondere im Vergleich mit ihrem Herkunftsland. Im Zielland der Migration sind Migranten aber meist besonderen gesundheitlichen, sozialen und ökonomischen Belastungen ausgesetzt (Razum et al. 2004, Geiger & Razum 2006).
