Zusammenfassung

Die im Jahr 2001 erschienene International Encyclopedia of the Social & Behavioral Sciences weist auf ihren 16 695 Seiten keinen Artikel über Norbert Wiener auf und – fast noch erstaunlicher – auch einen Artikel über die Kybernetik wird man dort vergeblich suchen (es gibt den Artikel „Cyborg“, aber keinen Artikel „Cybernetics“; in Band 21 schließlich findet man „Sociocybernetics“, ein Artikel, der sich auf die Second-order Cybernetics der Jahre nach 1970 beschränkt: Geyer 2001). Das deutet darauf hin, wie sehr das Buch und die Forschungstradition, die hier der Gegenstand unserer Beobachtung sind, bereits historisch geworden sind, oder, so könnte man den Befund zugespitzt auch lesen, wie sehr sie nicht einmal Teil jener Geschichte sind, die eine repräsentative Enzyklopädie der Sozialwissenschaften glaubt vergegenwärtigen zu müssen.
