Zusammenfassung
Unser Ausgangspunkt ist das Jahr 1945 – zwölf Jahre nach der Ankunft der Schönbergs in den USA und ein Jahr nach Schönbergs Pensionierung von der Lehrtätigkeit an der University of Southern California im Alter von 70 Jahren. Obwohl diese Jahre für Schönberg persönlich weniger ereignisreich waren als etwa die fiebrige Zeit von 1910 bis 1914, erscheinen sie in der historischen Perspektive gleichsam monumental – und für Schönberg überaus bedeutsam und komplex. Insbesondere sind es jene Jahre, die er mit Blick auf das befürchtete Schicksal des europäischen Judentums mit Bangen vorausgesehen hatte.
