Der Autor hatte diesen dystopischen Roman, der 1949 erschien, seit 1943 geplant als Erzählung „about the future – that is [...] in a sense a fantasy“. Noch 1948 schwankte er zwischen dem Titel „The Last Man in Europe“ und der vorliegenden Version.
