Zusammenfassung
DeMille [»Criticism«, S. 17] setzt den Beginn der amerikanischen Literaturkritik mit einem genauen Datum an, nämlich der Gründung der North American Review im Mai 1815 [vgl. Charvat, »Origins«]. Die Zeitschrift spezialisierte sich auf Originalbeiträge zur Philologie und vor allem auf eine europäische Literaturgeschichte. Daß journalistische Praxis und dichterisches Konzept für Poe untrennbar miteinander verbunden waren, wird in der Erläuterung seiner Literaturtheorie und Ästhetik noch deutlicher werden. Warum und wie sehr Poe einen Wandel amerikanischer Literaturkritik gefordert und bestimmt hat, kann jedoch erst durch einen Rückblick auf die Zeit vor Poes Eintritt in die Redaktion des SLM und vor dem Beginn seiner Karriere als Journalist beurteilt werden.
