In der kompositorischen Entwicklung de F.s lassen sich eine Entwicklungsphase, die bis 1902 dauert, eine zweite Periode, in welche seine ersten großen Werke im nationalen Stil fallen, eine dritte, ästhetisch vom Neoklassizismus geprägte Phase, und schließlich die argentinische Zeit unterscheiden.
