Zusammenfassung
I. bezeichnet im engeren Sinn eine moderne Richtung der Malerei. Initiiert wurde sie von einer Gruppe französischer Künstler — vorwiegend Maler —, deren erste als impressionistisch zu bezeichnende Werke in die 1860er und 70er Jahre fallen, die sich aber erst 1877 als ›Impressionisten‹ konstituierten. Den gemeinsamen Nenner fanden sie in dem Ziel, in ihren Bildern den vor dem jeweiligen Motiv empfundenen visuellen Eindruck festzuhalten. Aus diesem Anliegen lassen sich eine Reihe formaler Charakteristika der impressionistischen Malerei ableiten, in erster Linie die mitunter extreme Skizzenhaftigkeit in der maltechnischen Ausführung.
