Zusammenfassung

Griech. alétheia, lat. veritas, ital. verità, franz. verité, engl. truth. Dem deutschen Ausdruck liegen Begriffe zugrunde, die wie indogermanisch wâros (›vertrau-enswert‹), althochdeutsch wâra (›Vertrag, Bündnis-treue‹) oder altnordisch vârar (›Treuegelöbnis‹) Verlässlichkeit und Treue bekunden. Bildlich als nackte weibliche Gestalt mit Sonne, Palmenzweig oder Lorbeerkranz dargestellt, manchmal mit Spiegel oder Buch, seltener mit Pfirsich, seit dem 16. Jh. besonders oft als ›Veritas filia temporis‹ (Saxl 1963), die vom Zeitgott Chronos der Sonne entgegengeführt oder von ihm enthüllt wird. Oft begleitet von der Personifikation der ›Heuchelei‹ oder ›Verleumdung‹.
