Urban democracies in the Netherlands: social and political change, institutional continuities?

Abstract

The political history of the Netherlands is characterized by striking continuities. According to the Dutch political scientist Daalder, many peculiarities of contemporary Dutch politics can be traced to the political culture and institutions of the Dutch Republic (1579–1795)1. In the introduction to his ‘Politics in the Netherlands: how much change?’ (Daalder/Irwin 1989) he therefore claims that
