Transforming the World for Mozambican Youth: Perspectives on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development for At-Risk Adolescents

Abstract

Significant efforts have been made in fighting poverty around the globe since the adoption of the Millennium Development Goals in 2000. Each African country faces specific challenges in its pursuit of sustainable development. Given its history and the actual situation and context, Mozambique faces unique challenges in its pursuit of sustainable development for youth. The African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the program of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development, all of which are integral to the new 2030 Agenda, are discussed in the light of our data. We present results of a study with Mozambican adolescents: 796 adolescents and young people from public schools enrolled in grades 8–12, ages between 12 and 24 years old, both sexes, 373 (47.2%male). The contextualization of the situation of Mozambican adolescents and young people are described, based on a bio-sociodemographic profile, and data about health, family, and educational levels. The status and guarantee of the fundamental rights such as access to education, health, justice, and other basic services to minimize their exposure to risk and vulnerability is presented and integrated into the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. We identify existing challenges in Mozambique to promote positive youth development in the context of the sustainable development goals.
