External Radiation in Differentiated Thyroid Cancer in the Era of IMRT and Modern Radiation Planning Techniques

Practical Management of Thyroid Cancer

Abstract

The evidence for a role for external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) comes from single institution retrospective data most in the era before modern radiation techniques such as intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT). This chapter will review the evidence for adjuvant, unresectable and palliative radiation. The benefits of modern radiation treatment planning, such as more accurate delivery of radiation, greater sparing of normal tissues and reduced toxicities, will be reviewed. Further refinements in radiation techniques have opened up the possibilities of stereotactic radiation use to treat oligometastatic disease. The preliminary evidence for such techniques will be introduced.
