Abstract
This chapter introduces the handbook entitled Biopsychosocial Approaches to Understanding Health in South Asian Americans. The value of applying a holistic conceptualization of health to understand the health and disease status, specifically the chronic disease risk and burden, of South Asians in the U.S. as a group is considered. Additionally, the necessity of the practice of disaggregation in the study and treatment of South Asian Americans is emphasized. The biopsychosocial model of health (Engel 1977) is presented as a guiding framework for the handbook and its chapters.
