Abstract
I am a chemical and biological engineer teaching introductory engineering courses; I am an engineering education researcher with an interest in broadening opportunities for diverse students; I am the only Latina woman assistant professor in my college and a minority in my community; I am a mom of two small children (7 and 3.5), and I am married to my husband of 12 years and many more to come; I am powerful and impactful, my life is purposeful and part of a bigger picture.

Acknowledgments
I would like to first thank the monument in my life—the inner guide that reminds me every day that I possess the fire and motivation to persist despite my struggles and whose presence puts into perspective what is truly important in life. I am indebted to my wonderful husband of 12 years for the love and support he has provided throughout the years—he is my truest encourager and advocate. Nothing I have accomplished could have occurred without the inspiration I gain daily from my two beautiful daughters, Kayla and Saidee. Finally, I would like to thank people, including my parents, who, despite limited education and resources, fight daily to provide their children with a better life. Together, they teach me to live purposefully and unashamed of my walk in life and my potential to positively influence the lives of others.
