Emotional and Behavioral Symptoms in Neurodegenerative Diseases

Abstract

The neural system, including the brain and the spinal cord, consists of its structural units, the neurons whose main characteristic is the incapacity for reproduction or renewal, resulting to damages not being able to be repaired. Consequently, there are a number of diseases called neurodegenerative diseases, which affect the neurons of the human brain. They are a type of diseases that are widely spread, significantly preoccupying the scientific community, as the number of patients is expected to rise even more in the following years. The diseases are classified into two main categories based on the clinical picture of the patients and the topography of the dominant lesions. There will be description of the main diseases, namely Alzheimer’s, Parkinson, Huntington, ALS, as to the causes and the symptoms both emotionally and behaviorally. The main aim is the contact with the neurodegenerative diseases, their causes, their symptomatology as well as with the factors that reinforce the possibilities of their appearance which are grouped into two types, genetic and environmental. There has been significant progress in their treatment and in the guidelines given to caretakers. Nonetheless, they both result in the deceleration of the disease course and not in the complete cure as the brain damages are permanent.
