Abstract

This chapter discusses how royal upbringing was perceived and debated in the public sphere. The analysis is centred around reports on royal education in the Spanish press and evidence of parliamentary engagement with the subject. The Spanish public treated royal education as a relevant topic and projected its hopes, fears, and perceptions of its national identity onto royal heirs. In many ways, therefore, these discussions surrounding royal education in Spain reflected much wider concerns with socio-economic and political development, the extent of monarchical power, national renewal, and the influence of the Catholic Church. To allow for an added argumentative edge the chapter will be organised around three recurring themes or sentiments in the commentary on royal education: hope, fear, and national identity. The commentary on Isabel II’s, Alfonso XII’s, and Alfonso XIII’s will be analysed along those dimensions.
