Abstract

Enterprises considerably influence private and working life, and society at large, and often in a disquieting manner. This chapter argues that avoiding disquieting influences and creating favorable ones necessitate intentional actions, identified as enterprise design: arranging proper ways of organizing, based on a sound enterprise design science, firmly rooted in associated foundational sciences. Such prudent approach is often absent, leading to poor enterprise operational and strategic performance. The decades-long lingering problem of business and IT alignment is a case in point. Core reasons for poor performance are identified. Designing proper ways of organizing implies enterprise change, which is the central concern of enterprise governance. Discussion of the traditional corporate governance and IT governance perspectives, and their associated design implications, will clarify that these perspectives must be an integral part of enterprise governance and enterprise-wide design. Finally, the chapter provides preliminary considerations for the employee-centric theory of organization and introduces the foundational topics of subsequent chapters.
