Abstract
This chapter details the challenges facing Mondlane by 1968, which included a challenge by N’Kavandame. It describes Mondlane’s assassination and the leadership changes. It profiles Uria Simango, who was vice-president of Frelimo but lost out in the struggle that followed Mondlane’s death. It also profiles Marcelino dos Santos, Frelimo’s most influential ideological leader, and Samora Machel, who became head of Frelimo’s military after the death of Magaia and eventually assumed leadership of the party and became Mozambique’s first President.
