Abstract

This chapter documents Frelimo’s founding and the highly personalized political conflicts that resulted in many early leaders like Mabunda being expelled from the movement. It focuses on the problems created by Mondlane’s initial attempt to lead Frelimo from afar and his tragically short-sighted reliance on Leo Milas, an American who claimed to be a Mozambican even though he could not speak Portuguese.
