The Soils of Turkey

Part of the book series: World Soils Book Series ((WSBS))

Abstract

This account of the ‘Soils of Turkey’ has developed from an initial effort to update the composition and content of the Soil Map of Turkey and it was undertaken in two phases. During the first phase a comprehensive set of data was assembled to update the map by means of existing data sources, such as: (i) the soil map of Turkey at a scale of 1:25,000 (previously prepared by the former General Directorate of Soil and Water (TOPRAKSU -Turkish acronym) of the Ministry of Agriculture) and the GIS-based dataset developed by the contemporary General Directorate of Agricultural Reform (GDAR -TRGM of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock), (ii) the CORINE Land Cover map, at a scale of 1:100‚000, (iii) the modified and simplified soil parent material map at the 1:1‚000‚000 scale prepared by an interdisciplinary team of pedologists, geologists, geomorphologists, and GIS experts, (iv) the Digital Terrain Model SRTM-30, obtained by resampling of the 90 m resolution SRTM, used to compute the average slope and aspect for each soil polygon.
