Abstract

Surgery for gallstones remains one the most common surgical procedures in the developed world. Carl Langenbuch of Berlin performed the first successful cholecystectomy in June 1882. Muhewig performed the first laparoscopic cholecystectomy in 1986. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is now the most common laparoscopic operation performed by general surgeons.
