Abstract
This chapter explains the concept of stigma and how it impacts those who are in abusive relationships. We begin with an overview of the stigma concept and how it affects those experiencing IPV. Specific types of stigmas including internalized stigma, anticipated stigma, enacted stigma, perpetrator stigma, and cultural stigma are explained, offering readers a nuanced understanding of the similarities and differences in these types of stigmas. Conceptual models of the stigma process that are established in the literature are discussed, as well as assessments that measure IPV stigma. This information has implications for practice regarding how to assist survivors with understanding the stigma process and measuring the amount and types of stigma one is experiencing. Ways of overcoming stigma related to IPV, as well as strategies for ending IPV stigma, are shared.
