Abstract
This chapter discusses the policy context of the use of informetric indicators in research assessment. It introduces the notion of a multi-dimensional research assessment matrix, representing the multi-dimensionality of research performance, and the multi-faceted domain of science policy and research management. Next, it illustrates the influence of the policy context upon the choice of indicators. Finally, it introduces the notion of meta-studies that inform policy makers and evaluators about how to design an assessment process.
This chapter re-uses with permission selected paragraphs from Moed & Halevi (2015).
