Abstract
Polycythemia vera is a myeloproliferative neoplasm resulting in unregulated erythropoiesis. The overall incidence is relatively low in the child-bearing age population, with fewer than 50 cases reported in pregnant women. Mainstays of treatment include reduction of the hemoglobin and mitigation of the increased risk of thrombosis. Live birth rates in patients with polycythemia vera are low but can potentially be improved with treatment. Anesthetic management centers around venous thromboembolism prophylaxis. Common anesthetic agents are believed to be safe in patients with polycythemia vera. Neuraxial anesthesia is likely safe as long as the platelet and neutrophil counts are adequate and the patient is not currently receiving anticoagulation.
