Abstract

The purpose of the project of reconstruction of the Abbey of Santa Maria di Pulsano is to restore the original value of the Abbey, its shape and the relationship with the landscape. The work began with the evaluation of the existing site, an articulated system of structures, designed to prevent structural failures, or determined by the need of new spaces for the monastic life. These interventions have compromised the evaluation of the body of the Church and the hierarchy among its parts, that are currently incorporated into a series of rooms that conceal their value. In order to restore the real characters of the Abbey, founded in the late sixth century, some parts needs to be demolished and others to be added and the reinforcement of the ancient walls is required. Thanks to the reconstruction of the “essential” parts the project claims to restore the overall value of this architectural system.
