Abstract
The chapter begins by discussing what might be meant by special needs in a wider sense but notes that this chapter will mainly focus on disability in education. It also acknowledges the importance of a range of international agreements in this area. The next section goes on to discuss what is meant by disability and inclusion. The following sections examine evidence on the extent of disability and special needs in Africa before looking at the range and types of provision there are for SEN in African counties before considering considers issues and obstacles to SEN in Africa. The chapter ends with a discussion of examples of positive ways forward for SEN in Africa.
