Abstract
In this chapter, the recent history of organized afforestation is described together with the beginning of the national forest inventory (NFI) and simple empirical projections of forest resources in Iceland. The first national projection was conducted in 2004 and was aimed to develop means for accounting annual greenhouse gas fluxes related to forest and forestry, with special focus on the CO2 emission/removals and how different afforestation rates could affect these findings. A modified and improved version of the same model was applied in 2011 to make a long-term projection of growing stock and potential wood removals in Iceland under a business as usual scenario. The description of the modified model and some outputs from the model run are presented for 2010, 2020, 2060 and 2110. The validation of the model is still in progress. The estimated growing stock for 2010 was compared with NFI data and showed model overestimation which led to the conclusion that further improvements to the model are needed.
