Abstract

Arthrodesis, the creation of a bony union across a joint, is a radical procedure, which it contradicts the primary function of the joint, which is to provide motion. Arthrodesis of the shoulder is even more extreme because it has the largest range of motion of any ball-and-socket joint in the body, movement that is crucial for the upper limb function. The term shoulder arthrodesis is frequently used to describe what is actually humero-scapular arthrodesis in which the humerus is fused to the glenoid and/or acromion.
