Basic Biographical Information
Charles C. Kolb, “Charlie,” now a retired archaeologist, was a program officer for National Endowment for the Humanities (1991–2012) responsible for research and archival and library development projects. Charlie grew up in Erie, Pennsylvania, where he was born in 1940. After high school, he enrolled at The Pennsylvania State University and joined the Air Force ROTC program (1959–1962), preparing students to become officers while earning a college degree, which he obtained in 1962. These early studies trained him in navigation and aerial photo interpretation, chemistry, and history. After completing undergraduate studies, he submitted his dissertation, “Classic Teotihuacán Period Settlement Patterns in the Teotihuacán Valley, Mexico,” and received a PhD from Penn State in 1979. William T. Sanders and Frederick R. Matson, who were members of his graduate committee, and by Louis B. Dupree, guided his professional career.
