Basic Biographical Information

Luiz de Castro Faria was born in São João da Barra, Rio de Janeiro State, on July 5, 1913. He graduated in Library Science (National Library) and Museology (National Historical Museum, 1937), while working as a free practitioner and then as a volunteer assistant at the National Museum, Brazil, under the supervision of Heloísa Alberto Torres (archaeology), Raimundo Lopes (ethnology), and José Bastos de Ávila (physical anthropology). At the Division of Anthropology, Ethnology, and Archaeology at the National Museum, Castro Faria prepared material for classes and drawings. He also participated in activities and courses of archaeology, physical anthropology, and linguistics, following an anthropological training program that was based in a four-field perspective (Miranda and Araújo 2002).
