Abstract

De Quervain’s tenosynovitis is a disorder of the abductor pollicis longus (APL) and extensor pollicis brevis (EPB) tendons within the first dorsal compartment of the wrist. It is believed to be caused by repetitive microtrauma and subsequent inflammation in the tendon sheath containing the two aforementioned components, such as when performing activities requiring forceful gripping with ulnar deviation. It is the most common tendonitis of the wrist, preferentially affecting individuals between 30 and 50 years of age and the female gender in a 10:1 ratio, particularly postpartum women. Pain and tenderness are typically located over the radial styloid. “Finkelstein’s maneuver” is used to help diagnose this condition. Most common treatments include rest, modalities, analgesics, thumb spica splint, and corticosteroid injections.
