Abstract
Injuries of the wrist can generally be subdivided into two main categories: traumatic and overuse. Traumatic wrist sprains commonly occur as a result of an athletic injury but can occur in any setting, particularly in occupational settings with heavy use of the upper extremities. Common mechanisms of wrist injury include fall onto outstretched hand (FOOSH), direct contact in sports, and hyperextension. When evaluating the wrist, it is important to exclude more serious conditions such as fractures or systemic illnesses that can mimic presenting symptomatology. Workup includes a thorough history and problem-focused exam including special maneuvers. Management is mainly conservative with referral to a specialist in more serious cases involving fractures, neurovascular compromise, or systemic illness.
