Abstract

Eisenmenger’s syndrome is characterized by irreversible pulmonary hypertension resulting from an uncorrected congenital cardiac lesion leading to an intracardiac or aortopulmonary right to left shunt. The disorder is characterized by arterial hypoxemia and pulmonary hypertension. Anesthesia carries a significant risk for this population, with perioperative mortality estimated to be as high as 30%. Careful management of volume status, maintenance of systemic vascular resistance, and avoidance of factors that lead to increasing pulmonary hypertension are vital to a successful anesthetic. An awareness of the multisystem manifestations of this syndrome is also essential for proper perioperative management of these complicated patients.
