Abstract

A large amount of stainless steel dust rich in Fe, Cr, and Ni has been being generated in China. Smelting treatment is accepted as a practical method for the recovery/reutilization of these second resources, during which Fe, Cr, and Ni is reduced into one metal phase and then separated from the residue slag. Based on the typical compositions of stainless steel dust, the residual slag can be termed as CaO-SiO2-MgO-Al2O3 system. In this paper, the activity coefficients of Cr in Fe-Cr-Ni-C (-Si/Al) melt and the properties of CaO-SiO2-MgO-Al2O3-1%CrO system thermodynamically approached. Then, in laboratory experiments, the recovery ratios of Cr and its distribution behaviors between Fe-Cr-Ni-C melt and CaO-SiO2-MgO-Al2O3 slag system were examined.
