Abstract

The indications for open appendectomy are similar to that of laparoscopic appendectomy. Most cases of acute appendicitis are now performed laparoscopically. However, open appendectomy may still be performed based on the surgeon’s training; if the there is a lack of laparoscopic equipment or if the appendix cannot be removed laparoscopically. This chapter describes indications, essential steps, variations, and complications of this procedure. It provides a detailed template operative note for the procedure.
