Abstract

After making the decision to pursue a career in surgery, the choice of a residency training program is likely to be the second most important professional decision you make. Where you go for residency plays a tremendous role in your future career. It can determine future productivity, practice type (academic or community), or even number of publications and success in academic medicine (Beninato et al. 2016; Campbell et al. 2011). Although the process of selecting the best residency seems incredibly daunting and complex, taking a systematic approach can make the process less difficult. So, as with most major decisions or journeys, you should begin with the end in mind.
