Thomas Hodgkin (Fig. 1) was born into a family devoted to the Society of Friends (“Quakers”) on August 17, 1798, in Pentonville, in the parish of Clerkenwell, then a suburb of the rapidly growing metropolis of London (Geller and Taylor 2013). George III was King of England at the time of Hodgkin’s birth and Victoria was Queen at his death.
