History of Life
Billroth studied Natural Sciences and Medicine at the Universities of Greifswald, Göttingen, and Berlin, where he graduated in 1852. He published on pathological histology and became an associate professor in surgery and pathological anatomy in 1856. His early aspirations in pathology were terminated by the unsuccessful competition for the pathology professorship at the Charité-Berlin (Rudolf Virchow became Professor of Pathology). He became Professor of Clinical Surgery in Zurich in 1860 and Professor of Surgery at the University in Vienna in 1867. In addition to his medical achievements, he was also a talented musician and a close friend of Johannes Brahms, with whom he frequently performed together.
